Human Rights Treaty Bodies

Human Rights Treaty Bodies

Upon ratifying a treaty, a country is legally obligated to enforce and promote those rights identified in a treaty through its various national legislation and processes. For the purposes of accountability, the country is also responsible for submitting reports every four-to-five years to the human rights treaty bodies to demonstrate its efforts to meet its obligations under the respective treaties. The human rights treaty bodies consist of committees of experts assigned to monitor the implementation of the nine -core human rights treaties. The treaty bodies may also be updated on a country’s enforcement of the treaty by other United Nations agencies, non-governmental organizations, and other elements of civil society. The bodies, or committees, are responsible for reviewing these reports with the State under review and produces a report on their findings and recommendations.
