Dr. Shaheed has presented two reports to the General Assembly on 19 October 2011 and on 11 October 2012, along with one report to the Human Rights Council on 16 March 2012. His reports use primary interviews and secondary sources which document human violations in accordance with international law. The Special Rapporteur and his reports evaluate Iran's record in the context of the recommendations voluntarily adopted by the government during the first Universal Periodic Review of the country as well as the five major human rights conventions Iran has signed on to, the ICCPR, ICESCR, CRC, CERD, and CRPD.
Dr. Ahmed Shaheed is an internationally recognized expert on foreign policy, international diplomacy, democratization and human rights reform especially in Muslim States. He has twice held the Office of Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, a position he used to promote human rights standards and norms.
During his time in government, Dr. Shaheed played a leading role in the Maldives democratic transition and in its human rights reform process.
